Fused glass pendants by KHF Glass Birtsmorton

Following on from my post about photographing hand engraved glassware for KHF Glass Birtsmorton I am pleased to show off some images of a small number of the hand fused glass pendants made by Karen.

Once again I decided to go for a more 'rustic' backdrop, but concentrating lighting to show off the pendant (including any dichroic features) rather than the display stand.

No Heroes Brewing Co

The cans from No Heroes brewing company are some of the most aesthetic I have come across, however with the range, all but a couple of cans, being metallic silver (and therefore highly reflective), the challenge was to capture images of the cans without showing all of the photography and lighting equipment reflected in them. With an intricate set-up of lights/reflectors and diffuser panels this was achieved in camera and so I was rather pleased to achieve the desired look with very little post-processing work involved. I had free reign to capture the cans and felt that a monochromatic look (shooting against a grey backdrop) would show the 'can only' shots off to their best advantage with specific lighting arrangements giving the cans some depth, whilst a warmer was feel introduced for glass and ingredient shots.

Last month I had the pleasure of photographing oodles of hand engraved glassware for the 'relatively' local company KHF Glass Birtsmorton. Karen has completed a large variety of engraved designs and wanted a suite of images to show her current catalogue and provide a point of reference for commissions. We had done a few test shots earlier in the year with a pure black background but felt that these did not show the glassware to its best advantage and so decided to go for a more 'rustic' backdrop, but lighting this to ensure the engraving remained the focus point of each image.

With lockdown playing its part in restricting outlets for sale (you can normally see Karen's wares at The Gallery in Malvern, and The Fold craft markets) and Karen preferring not to post glasses, she is currently working on new designs and commissions in readiness for 'the new normal'.

Full 'on site' photography package

Earlier in the year, as part of a company promo series, we were booked for photography and video site coverage in Barnsley.

By booking our 'day rate' commercial package, images can be taken to work around the site's normal working day rather than having to push for 'slot times' to achieve the brief. On this assignment the site staff at the concrete division in Barnsley made our job so much easier by being totally on board with visitors walking around with cameras, and were only too happy to facilitate capturing images/footage of the vast external site, staff and product. 'Normal' site shots were captured but we also wanted to create something a bit different by using the amazing sunlight available on the day and so we also took a series of images incorporating the sun to give the site a little more depth. 'Staff at work' was also part of brief and the team were great fun to work with for 'natural' shots. Packshots of product were also on the menu but without the possibility of 'on site' backdrops in this working environment, products were set, lit and photographed on site with post-processing creating the desired background.

'Highly commended' commercial award from the Master Photographer's Association

With photography postponements galore over the last few months, we have been working with our corporate clients to re-arrange shoots for the future and are all looking to towards a time when we can share and capture those important meetings/conferences/product shoots.

To keep busy I have decided to spend my time testing out new techniques, undertaking training and receiving critique on my images from professional photographic bodies so that when we are up and running again I can use this learning and feedback to make the service I provide even better!

As part of this I entered a commissioned product image from last year into the Master Photographer's Association June critique and am REALLY pleased to share that I was awarded a 'Highly Commended' for this commercial image.

I am committed to continually improving and evolving my photography, will be sharing this journey and look forward to seeing you all again soon.

'Warrior' music photoshoot shoot part II

Following on from the 'street style', another couple of edgy looks were put together by for Kat's shoot. The brief for these was to keep the environment simple but given the amazing dress that was in play, there was no way we weren't going to set up a huge fan to get some movement in the fabric and aided by numerous head flips, Kat's hair. Some colour grading was added in post-processing to give the images a bit of 'punch'.

'Warrior' music promo photoshoot - Kat

We have great opportunities to be involved with a wide variety of shoots and are proud to have worked with Kat on a couple of occasions in relation to her single 'Warrior' - released in February to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Holiday Fund. Kat had already recorded her single at (in association with Marc Cotterill and Inspire Music) and needed to images to go with this and so a photo-shoot was arranged at Dolls of Decadence in Birmingham, with Paulinah providing endless outfits to squeeze in as many looks as possible in the time available ranging from 'girl next door promo' to a harder edged 'street' style. Edited but ungraded images were provided for the promo so marketing could add the flavour they wanted to these but with a harder edged style, my version of images have been colour graded accordingly, to give a more stylised representation.

Darley Abbey Cider Product Shots

This time of year I would normally be ploughing through hundreds of trade show and conference shots but, rightly so, with cancellation of large gatherings I have been working on product shots. Darley Abbey is a truly artisan cider company using over 40 varieties of donated apples from across Derbyshire; apples used can include old local varieties and because they are frequently not perfect, would not make their way into local supermarkets. As such, to represent the ethos of the company, images are to have a rustic look, concentrate on the cider bottle and include imperfect apples in the background. These were shot in the studio so we could control lighting and reflections on the product.

'Dining detail' - conference photography

Some of the international conference work we do can involve 'dine around' evenings, where the event management team (in this case the fabulous www.insynq.co.uk) arrange for their client an evening of gastro delights at hand-picked off-site restaurant(s). On such evenings the client photography requirement will, primarily, be to capture delegates enjoying the evening, but also have a record of the venue(s) and any product associated with the sponsorship of the evening. These shots are always a challenge because we have about four and a half minutes (OK it can seem like it but may be slightly longer, although not by much) to capture the venue before it is inundated with, in this case, over 280 delegates.

The 'sponsorship' products are shot on a similar timescale because, as they are usually drinks, we have to grab a bottle/can of each to shoot for an appealing image before it gets whisked away to be served. These images were taken just after the delegates were seated and we could use a table in the now empty courtyard (also pictured) of Bovino to set a couple of flash units up to light the product as quickly and effectively as possible. We love a challenge!

When possible we also take images of the food, again, normally as it is being served - these are normally 'grab shots' dodging the super-efficient waiting staff and so not your traditional 'foodie' shoot

Corporate coverage; it doesn't only have to be conference rooms!

Some of our corporate work involves international conference coverage and part of the brief is to generate a 'closing video' giving not only a representation of the conference itself, but also a flavour of the hosting location. We normally arrive a day or two before the conference starts so that we can familiarize ourselves with the venue, check locations for photography and discuss any last minute additions for coverage during the conference, and we use this time to capture the 'flavour' shots of the area and venue and can give us a chance to be a little creative with these. Below is a handful of such shots (including the conference hotel late one evening, shot from across the Grand Canal) when we visited Venice.

Packshot or other?

I have been working with a company on an exciting new marketing concept and although I am sworn to secrecy at the moment (but keep your eyes peeled for more news) I wanted to share a couple of images that were captured as we were discussing the pro's and con's of packshot v. environment images and how best for the company to present it's concept.

This is really to show you how different a single product can look by just changing the presentation and lighting!

Corporate event days - golf at the Forest of Arden

Product photography is only part of our repertoire, we also cover corporate event days. Last year, on a scorching summer's day, at the Forest of Arden we covered the Today's Group first 'golf event' and so we were booked to not only photograph in excess of 40 members, but also the sponsored much-needed refreshment stands dotted around the course. Our 'slightly off menu' brief was to also provide continuous video footage of a single hole for insurance purposes as evidence of anyone securing a hole in one where a car was up for grabs...........It didn't happen this time!

Images were provided along with a branded slideshow created from images captured during the day and evening dinner detailing sponsor and winner details for the company's internal use and marketing.

American Pale Ale from the Stourton Brewing Co

Enville Ales launched Stourton Brewing Co. to introduce a different style of ales to meet the rapidly increasing demand for craft-style beers incorporating 'New World' ingredients and using new brewing and conditioning techniques. American Pale Ale is their first new American-style beer that is creamy, smooth and bursting with citrusy aroma and flavour. Once again photography requirements were 'pack shot' images for general marketing as well as 'ingredient-driven' images for brand-specific awareness.

I am currently capturing some images for a great local brewery - Enville Ales

Several years ago I first visited Enville Brewery (www.envilleales.com) to grab some images for a lifestyle magazine I was shooting for. The new owners were brewing their honey-based Enville Ale and were working on increasing their distribution in the pub and bottled market. Fast forward to now; the brewery has released several different ales and these have become a household name in the local area and beyond (and as Phil is a huge 'supporter' of Enville Brewery it is definitely a household name with us). We are currently updating the brewery's packshot images and introducing some 'lifestyle' type ingredient shots into their portfolio.

This is an ongoing project but here are some taster images..

Branded product photography - spices

Following on from some 'standard' packshot images, our concept was to produce Natco branded marketing for some of the spices in the range. 'Lighter' and 'darker' image sets for different markets were created either showing individual spices or presented as ingredients.

Please remember if you are providing product to send the best examples of your packaging/product that you have available and to make sure that these are wrapped well to avoid damage.
